Resting In Stillness
It’s been quite a month on the home front — joyful moments followed by lots of crushing ones. I think about a sermon I recently heard and three simple yet powerful words that Jesus spoke over a raging storm: “Hush, be still.” (Mark 4:39). The comfort and rest they immediately brought me was profound. He spoke these words over a furious squall centuries ago and they still carry the weight of heaven’s calm today. They echo into the storms that rise within us as well. One moment, life can feel peaceful and calm and the next, wild with wind and waves. Grief, uncertainty, disappointment, and fear can all come crashing down at once, leaving us caught between faith and fatigue, hope and heartache.
A lesson I’ve been reminded of is this: peace isn’t found in the absence of chaos; it’s found in the presence of our Creator. The disciples assumed the weather was the problem, but the real issue was inside them – their terror and frantic need for control. (Let’s face it — we can all relate.) When Jesus stood and said, “Hush, be still,” the winds obeyed, and so did their hearts. His presence changed everything, bringing calm not just to the sea but to their souls.
I’ve spent seasons trying to manage my own storms — organizing, achieving, striving to appear all was well. On the outside, it might have looked like I had it all together. But underneath, without Jesus Christ truly at the center, I was running on empty. Life without His presence may seem like living, but it isn’t the kind of living God created us for.
There’s a holy quiet that comes when we invite Him into the heart of our chaos. It doesn’t mean the waves disappear immediately. It means that even as they rise, we hear His voice cutting through the noise: “I’m here. You’re not alone. It’s OK.” His peace doesn’t erase every storm; it reshapes how we move through them.
Perhaps that’s the invitation for all of us today – not to wish the storm away, but by faith to rest in the One who commands it. Jesus’ authority remains unchanged, calling us to hush the striving, hush the fear, and let His peace speak louder than the wind. When He’s at the center, the surface may still ripple, but the soul can rest.
