The Power of Identity

Identity is a word we often hear, but rarely stop to define for ourselves. Knowing who you are and what makes you uniquely you is crucial. Why? It informs the foundation of your sense of self, helps you to make choices that align with your values and enables you to build authentic relationships. Knowing who you are helps you to live a more purposeful and fulfilling life.
Some people let the years pass by without giving their identity very much thought. This makes it tough for them to know exactly what they want. This can create anxiety, uncertainty or indecisiveness when making choices. Others base their understanding of themselves on the opinion of others (I speak from personal experience that this is never a good thing to do!)
How do you begin to understand your identity? In coaching, we talk a lot about strengths, beliefs, personality, traits, values and needs. Each of these contribute to self image – who you are as a person. However, I believe the most important thing is to understand who God says you are. The Bible is filled with amazing truths about how God has created us in His image. Believers in Christ receive a new identity as God’s children – we are part of His forever family, with great love lavished on us (1 John 3:1). We are reminded throughout Scripture to remind ourselves often of our identities, as we too easily forget!
Start by asking yourself the question: Who am I? Think about the beliefs that guide your decisions. Write down what you tell yourself throughout the day because there are many subtle lies we tell ourselves. Then take time to learn what God says about you. Notice the Biblical truths that contradict lies that you’ve believed about yourself. Make it a practice in life to discover and internalize them. I love to do this by memorizing specific Scripture verses and reading them out loud.
Once we begin to really understand our identity, we start to live differently. We choose more wisely. We consider the impact of what we say and do. We grow more considerate towards others. We don’t take things so personally. We begin to experience hope, healing and freedom, as we authentically show up in life. So powerful!
