One Steady Clock

Hi friends — have you heard of Segal’s Law? It says, “A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure.” It’s a simple but powerful reminder that when it comes to the wisdom of managing time—and really, life itself—more isn’t always better. I’ve realized that what I do NOT need is another system or strategy, but clarity. Because when too many voices are speaking at once, I get nothing done as even the next small step feels uncertain. Overwhelm always shows up when I have too many inputs, and this plays out in my emotions, responsibilities, grief, and physical clutter.

Let me give you an example. As a follower of Christ, my business is led by the Holy Spirit. Over the years, I’ve been part of lots of groups and have heard many amazing strategies for growing in the industry. One is social media—IG reels, videos, Facebook groups, webinars—all great ways to build visibility. I tried some of them, but they didn’t work for me. So I stepped back and prayed, “Lord, this is Your business. Which way do You want me to go? I want what You want“, and felt an unmistakable leading toward word-of-mouth referrals. I was relieved to switch gears, and it’s been exciting to see who God brings me to work with, all in His perfect timing.

I also trust Him when my business ebbs and flows. Years ago, right before my brother died, I remember questioning why I didn’t have many clients on the calendar. I felt super discouraged. Yet God knew that season would be needed for grieving and healing—and had cleared my schedule for just that. He provided exactly what I needed, and I didn’t have to strive for it. So now when things slow down, I can be sure that He is preparing what I can’t yet see. It’s thrilling to witness how He shows up in miraculous ways, as I simply follow Him in faith. For instance, an organizing project where I earned in two days what I would normally make in two months. Praise God! My business is fueled by faith, not by others who tell me I should try another thing.

I believe time wisdom is not about managing more inputs, but about putting competing voices to rest so we can recognize and follow God’s steady leading in how we use our time. The truth is that God is not a God of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33). Order is part of His character and is reflected in how He operates in the world and among His people. Clarity comes when we stop adding in more strategies and instead slow down enough to listen to His voice. When you ask in faith, you will be shown the best way to go.

I have witnessed that real freedom begins when we release the pressure to hold every “watch,” and instead rest under one steady “clock” — the Holy Spirit — as the source of all wisdom, clarity and timing. As we do, the noise quiets, peace rises, and the solution becomes clearer as our focus remains on Him.

Coaching Connection:

1. Where in my life am I looking at too many watches?
2. What would change if I rested on one steady clock instead?

To Your Growth,

I first heard Segal’s Law at a large church gathering – the minister quoted it when people were straggling in late – but I never knew its origin until recently. I appreciate your insightful spin on it!

Glad you enjoyed it – and I love that your first encounter with Segal’s Law came from a minister joking about late arrivals!
